Mark Fisher was born in Sheffield (UK) in 1963. He’s been collecting black music since the late 1970s, when he was into jazz, disco and the early rap records.
Early influences on the soul front were Richard Searling’s Saturday evening shows in the early 80s on Radio Hallam and Colin Curtis’s Tuesday evening sessions at Berlin in Manchester in the mid-80s. In the 90s, the Canal Tavern in Thorne, the Norfolk Village in London, the Southport weekenders and Soul Essence in Great Yarmouth were the mainstays for a proper night out. After living in Manchester, where he worked in book publishing, and London, where he was a financial journalist, Mark moved to Amsterdam in 1997. As a DJ, Mark is known for his sweet soul, gospel and crossover spins. As Hans Diepstraten once put it, “Mark Fisher has the very best taste in the world”. He plays a mean jazz dance set, too. Mark first met Hans & Harry at one of their legendary Sunday Casablanca sessions on the Zeedijk in 2001, after he saw a flyer in the window of a bike shop. The track playing when he walked through the door was Almeta Latimore’s “These Memories”: he knew he was in good hands. Since then, he has appeared on Fingerpoppin Soul more than 40 times. Mark’s current top 5 sweet & deep spins (October 2018) The Exciting Legion Aires – Rain, Rain (D-Vine Spirituals 7”) Tyrone Harris – Nothing Seems To Go Right (Barclay & The III 7”) The Techniques IV – It Feels So Good Inside (Jasino 7”) The Fabulous Golden Wings feat. On Saturday November 24 we celebrate 25 YEARS of Fingerpoppin Soul. We started our radio show in June of 1993 and have been on the air continuously since then.
We start at 20:30 and have a great line up of live acts and DJs to make this night special. Live music will be provided by Amsterdams top soul-jazz band The Stubbs (including horns and organ) with ultra talented singer Valerie Curlingford who together will perform a set of Fingerpoppin Soul classics; second Live act on the night is Surinam soul legend Ed Rust who will wow the audience with his selection of Southern Soul pearls. The DJs we have selected are all veterans of the Fingerpoppin Soul community and have been guests on the show many times over the years: - Mark Fisher with his unique selection of sweet soul, gospel and crossover sounds, - Brussels genius Timmy Leonard bringing his rare soul 45s, - DJ Moonshine playing original 78s only on his dedicated Garrard record players, - VJ Jos Belt wowing the dancers with his set of original soul clips on the big video screen, and maybe Hans & Harry will also spin some of their faves on the night. Add to all this the beautiful venue with great drinks and sophisticated vibe and we have the makings of a classic night. Tickets are only EUR 7.50 and can be ordered on the Club Mystique website and are available at the following Amsterdam record shops: - City Records (Geldersekade 100A, 1012 BM Amsterdam) - Backbeat Records (Egelantiersstraat 19, 1015 PV Amsterdam) - Waxwell Records (Gasthuismolensteeg 8, 1016 AN Amsterdam) - Record Palace (Weteringschans 33-A, 1017 RV Amsterdam) |
