We kick off 2020 with a hattrick of inspiring guest DJ's : on Feb 13 we have Utrecht's finest Mr Tom de Jong, he always comes up with interesting records, he's still diggin in the crates and one of our most invited guest Dj's. On Feb 27 we welcome Taco from Waxwell Records Amsterdam. Taco is very broadminded in his musical taste but especially for us he's gonna spin of mix of various Lowrider/Group Vocal Harmonies etc maybe he's gonna play something Funky from his early beginnings as part of the Struttin DJ collective. Taco also has his own radio show on Red Light Radio called Heavy Heavy Radio show (also on Mixcloud!). Finally on March 5 we welcome for the first time DJ Guzz from Haarlem. If ever there was a DJ who can keep the dancefloor non stop busy & sweaty it's the man with the Funky Hat Guzz . We became aware of him during his long residency at the now sadly defunkt West Pacific nights in Amsterdam. Expect a guestspot that includes Latin Soul, New Orleans Funk and Old school R&B ! We're looking forward to hearing these guys !!!

Mark Fisher was born in Sheffield (UK) in 1963. He’s been collecting black music since the late 1970s, when he was into jazz, disco and the early rap records.
Early influences on the soul front were Richard Searling’s Saturday evening shows in the early 80s on Radio Hallam and Colin Curtis’s Tuesday evening sessions at Berlin in Manchester in the mid-80s. In the 90s, the Canal Tavern in Thorne, the Norfolk Village in London, the Southport weekenders and Soul Essence in Great Yarmouth were the mainstays for a proper night out. After living in Manchester, where he worked in book publishing, and London, where he was a financial journalist, Mark moved to Amsterdam in 1997. As a DJ, Mark is known for his sweet soul, gospel and crossover spins. As Hans Diepstraten once put it, “Mark Fisher has the very best taste in the world”. He plays a mean jazz dance set, too. Mark first met Hans & Harry at one of their legendary Sunday Casablanca sessions on the Zeedijk in 2001, after he saw a flyer in the window of a bike shop. The track playing when he walked through the door was Almeta Latimore’s “These Memories”: he knew he was in good hands. Since then, he has appeared on Fingerpoppin Soul more than 40 times. Mark’s current top 5 sweet & deep spins (October 2018) The Exciting Legion Aires – Rain, Rain (D-Vine Spirituals 7”) Tyrone Harris – Nothing Seems To Go Right (Barclay & The III 7”) The Techniques IV – It Feels So Good Inside (Jasino 7”) The Fabulous Golden Wings feat. Harold Huntley Jr. - I Got A Friend (72 Designer 7”) The Day-Tons - I've Got To Tell You About It (Part 1) (Day-Ton Productions 7”) On Saturday November 24 we celebrate 25 YEARS of Fingerpoppin Soul. We started our radio show in June of 1993 and have been on the air continuously since then.
We start at 20:30 and have a great line up of live acts and DJs to make this night special. Live music will be provided by Amsterdams top soul-jazz band The Stubbs (including horns and organ) with ultra talented singer Valerie Curlingford who together will perform a set of Fingerpoppin Soul classics; second Live act on the night is Surinam soul legend Ed Rust who will wow the audience with his selection of Southern Soul pearls. The DJs we have selected are all veterans of the Fingerpoppin Soul community and have been guests on the show many times over the years: - Mark Fisher with his unique selection of sweet soul, gospel and crossover sounds, - Brussels genius Timmy Leonard bringing his rare soul 45s, - DJ Moonshine playing original 78s only on his dedicated Garrard record players, - VJ Jos Belt wowing the dancers with his set of original soul clips on the big video screen, and maybe Hans & Harry will also spin some of their faves on the night. Add to all this the beautiful venue with great drinks and sophisticated vibe and we have the makings of a classic night. Tickets are only EUR 7.50 and can be ordered on the Club Mystique website and are available at the following Amsterdam record shops: - City Records (Geldersekade 100A, 1012 BM Amsterdam) - Backbeat Records (Egelantiersstraat 19, 1015 PV Amsterdam) - Waxwell Records (Gasthuismolensteeg 8, 1016 AN Amsterdam) - Record Palace (Weteringschans 33-A, 1017 RV Amsterdam) On Friday Aug 24th 2018 a very special concert takes place ! For one night only all the Surinam Soul legends get together for the anniversary of Gijs Winter's Fifty years in showbusiness !
Gijs recorded many ( now very collectable) singles in the Seventies. He will be joined by Brian Bijlhout, Louis Windzak ( The Dutch Otis Redding), Eddy Assan, Romeo Olmberg ( Blakka Roetoe), Ed Rust ( Master Blaster), Jules Sloote ( Combo Five), Lucien Fellclen, Alfons Wielingen ( The Needles), Henry Cumberbatch ( Falling Stones) Where ? Wi Eegi Kerki, Kortvoort 73, Amsterdam Z.O. In Fingerpoppin Soul show no 1294, thursday Aug 23rd, we will spinning a lot of records of the above mentioned artists ! Tune in and come to the gig ! In Pride Week 2018 (July 28 to August 5) SALTO Stads FM becomes "Pride FM" for a week. This means that the full schedule is changed and all programs are 100% dedicated to the Pride Week.
Fingerpoppin Soul of course fully supports this and will in the show of August 2 be fully dedicated to the Pride theme. This means the show will only contain records made by gay artists or with a gay theme. There will be no compromise of course in the quality of the records played, Soul from all eras will be featured, by artists like Arthur Conley, Bessie Smith, Labi Siffre, Carl Bean, Rahsaan Patterson, Luther Vandross, Ma Rainey, Little Richard, Dusty Springfield, Jackie Shane (transgender), Laura Nyro, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the Dynamic Superiors, Barbara Lewis, Queen Latifah, Keith Barrow, James Cleveland, Ronnie Dyson, and many others! Next week the venerable North Sea Jazz Festival is held again at the AHOY in Rotterdam. From Friday the 13th of July to Sunday the 15th hundreds of artists will perform in a dozen halls in Hollands main seaport city.
As always we will be there, although to be honest the main attractions at the festival are o in the early hours of the first day. The O'Jays are finally performing and they start their set at 5:15 PM... As soon as they finish we will hurry to another hall to see the magnificent Durand Jones & the Indications again. Late on the Friday neo soul legend Maxwell will do his thing. The other two days at NSJ don't really match this first day but we will see... |
